Sponge Crab
During the day the sponge crabs are hiding away in caves and cracks, only coming out at night to scavenge on the dead plants and animals which it finds. It is carnivorous and sponge crabs will open shells with their front claws but will mostly scavenge for dead creatures.
The sponge crabs are found on coral and rock reefs across the Indo-Pacific. They are usually seen in the rubble areas on reef tops.
I've seen this in Lapu-lapu City Phillipines. My facebook is Joshua jay M. Juaner
Hi joshuaner3,
If you look at https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/99...... you will see a Sponge Crab which looks similar to your spotting. That spotter says that it is a new species and names its discoverer as Dr. Jose Naval, but unfortunately there is no citation provided. I am trying to find some more information about this and will let you know if I come across anything significant. If it turns out that this is not from the Genus Dromidia, then you could call your spotting "Unidentified Dromiidae". I have no doubt that your crab comes from the Family.
