It is in the Mallow family with Hibiscus (Malvaceae) which explains some of the similarities.

Wow, absolutely agree after viewing and reading about it. Completely new plant for me. Interesting that it isn't even a hibiscus at all...just referred to as one.

Yes, hybrid makes sense. The leaves do look like a geranium and the flower has a rose of sharon feel but it's not quite right. Beautiful hybrid if that's what it is...

My neighbor who has this in her backyard is puzzled about it . Just seems to be a mix of hibiscus and Rose of Sharon. Could be some hybrid.

I was hoping to see if anyone had ID'd yet. I would love to know what it is. I have read the thread and just wanted to say that there are Rose of Sharon that are a little different often referred to as Old Fashioned Rose of Sharon. But the zoom on one bloom doesn't look like rose of sharon and neither does the leave structure. Waiting to hear......

Yes, my personal garden is full of purple. It really is such a beautiful color in the garden. Plus, I always find that my purple flowers do better here in Michigan...LOL

Yes, I was thinking hibiscus when I first saw it. The leaves are different though than what I would normally think of with hibiscus. Maybe its a hybrid.

Your profile picture has a purple flower too.
When I visited my neighbors backyard today to see a water bath she had bought for the birds I saw this tree. I thought it looked very pretty. i am going to search in the hibicus family.

Yeah I guess it is in nature at least. I personally love red but I guess now that I recall I used to state purple was my favorite color as a teenager. Flowers in purple are always so beautiful. Plus, I am interested to see what the final consensus is on the ID.

Th rose of sharon has a distinct center with prominent stamens. This bloomed with flowers over lapping.
I will check the Malvaceae out.
My neighbor has been trying to find the name and has finally decided to take a leaf to show to the local nursery.

could it be Rose of Sharon, or something else in the Malvaceae?
