A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Fagus grandifolia
Smooth, silver-gray bark often has lichen circles and patterns on it. Keeps its leaves into winter and in this case, into early spring! The tree is monoecious, with flowers of both sexes on the same tree. The fruit is a small, sharply-angled nut, borne in pairs in a soft-spined, four-lobed husk.
Favours shade.
