A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Ants are social insects of the family Formicidae and, along with the related wasps and bees, belong to the order Hymenoptera. Ants evolved from wasp-like ancestors in the mid-Cretaceous period between 110 and 130 million years ago and diversified after the rise of flowering plants. Ants form colonies that are consist of millions of individuals. They range in colour from brown to black and range in length from 1/16 to 1/8 inches (1.5–3.2 mm).
Most ant species live in the soil. Some, like the carpenter ants, also live in wood (they excavate, but do not actually eat the wood). Some ants live in cavities made inside plants, such as acorns, twigs, and galls.
I take this photos at home. They're walking on a plant leaf, from the soil.
