Tamias
There are many different types of chipmunks. The Eastern chipmunk can be 11 inches long and may weigh as much as 4.4 ounces. The size and weight may vary according to species. You can tell whether or not a rodent is a chipmunk because of it's striped back. If it does not have a striped back, it may be a ground squirrel or another type of squirrel. Most species of chipmunks live in North America, primarily in the mountainous regions, where they may share a habitat with a mountain lion. If a mountain lion spotted a chipmunk, he would try to eat it. This is a predator-prey relationship, with the chipmunk being the prey and the cougar being the predator. Since the chipmunk is small, fast, and able to go relatively unseen in a rocky terrain, it is harder for a predator to catch one. The gestation period for both western and eastern chipmunks lasts 31 days. At the end of the gestation period, females give birth to between one and eight offspring. This type of reproduction is sexual.
Almost all species of chipmunk are found in North America, with the exception of the Siberian chipmunk, which is found mostly in Asia. Some chipmunks make their home in the ground, while others might make it in a log, nest, or tree. They are typically found in mountainous places, in alpine forests. Chipmunks mostly eat seeds, nuts, or berries, but being omnivores, the may eat bugs, worms, or small frogs.
