Spotting

Description:

Found at Mt. Papandayan, an active volcano in West Java, Indonesia. I have tried ID'ing with books and the internet with no luck. My professors dont know either. Looks like it could be some form of primate with the large hallux, but i really dont know. The coin is a 1000 rupiah piece, which is about the size of an american nickel. Its a VERY large animal, whatever it is. We found leopard prints next to it that were a little smaller.

Habitat:

The last eruption was in 2002, and it was in a valley type area. It was in an area called the black forest which is just charred trees. All the plants in the area are pioneer species due to the recent eruption. There was primary forest along the edges of the valley where the lava didn't go, as well as on top of the mountain so the area is capable of holding large predators such as the leopard.

Notes:

So I messed up a bit when I took the picture. I was so excited about finding the leopard print that i neglected to notice how odd this print was. There was a second one behind it, but i didnt take a picture to show the gait and i didnt look around to see if i could find others. I didnt notice other prints right away because the ground was mostly covered in brush and this was a small clearing on the ground.
