Equus africanus asinus
Donkey. The donkey is a domesticated member of the horse family. The wild ancestor of the donkey is the African wild ass. Has been used as a working animal for at least 5,000 years. The male is called a jack and a female is called a jenny or jennet. A young donkey is called a foal. Jack donkeys are often used to produce mules.
These donkeys were quite playful and each wanted the ball. Their home is in the farmyard exhibit at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, Maryland. Children loved them.
