‘Awapuhi (Red Ginger, Ostrich Plume or Pink Cone Ginger)

A tubular flowers stem from a thick stalk and have small, soft petals. Ranging from 3 to 15 feet tall, these plants posess flourecent, cone-like flowers that grow from 6-12 feet high. Habitat:

The red ginger is native to Malaysia and can also be found in tropical areas such as Hawaii, Guadelupe, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Puerto Rico and Samoa, where the ginger is the national plant also konwn as "tequila".

Notes:

Hawaiians used this plant for medicinal purposes such as easing headaches or stomach pain and occationally for asthetic decor. Hawaiian ali‘i (chiefs) occasionally wore these plants during special events.
