The mushroom looks like a White Oysterette (Cheimonophyllum candidissimum) but I cannot find enough information to confirm it. I get a lot of these in my area in New York. Mostly on dead twigs from hardwoods by the water as well.
I see them quite often in Saugerties, almost always on a dead hemlock, this specific one seems to be at the end of its life. Can be made into a tea, apparently it has some great properties to it!
This stage of a fern is referred to as "Fiddle Head" because of its resemblance to the top of a violin.
