I've heard these referred to as "little brown mushrooms" or "LBMs" as there are many many varieties that look almost identical and can only be differentiated by looking at the spores under magnification. Many varieties are poisonous, do not eat without a positive identification.
That's crazy! I've never seen anything like that. I've gotta google that one.
