And actually, the Genus makes more sense. I have positively ID'd other Libellula species in my area. (That's what I get for posting in a hurry ;)

Looks like Canada thistle - a nasty invasive in the NY, N.E. region. Pretty flowers and some birds will eat it, but wicked spreads, livestock avoids it & you don't want to tangle with the spines.

Crane fly - either Tipulidae or Tabnidae family - not harmful :)
