No, it isn't an injury. As male Bradypus sloths reach maturity, they develop a bright patch on their backs (presumably the females find this to be attractive? Female people think it's pretty, anyway).

Thank you! We always just called them geckos but I'm trying to be better about finding out and using the correct names for creatures.
