Australian Pelican

Pelecanus conspicillatus

Description:

A large waterbird, males slightly larger than females, both look similar in colouring - large pouched pink beak, sharp hook on end of top mandible, yellow bare skin around eyes, white body feathers and black and white wing and tail feathers and lower back, some spiky black/grey feathers on back of head and neck, short thick legs and webbed feet (pale blue colour), flies and glides on thermals very well, but waddles in an ungainly manner on land, glides effortlessly on water surface, plunges head underwater to catch and eat fish.

Habitat:

Found throughout Australia on inland and coastal waterways. These ones on a man made water supply lake along with dozens of other species associated with wetlands and lakes.
