Catalpa Sphinx

Ceratomia catalpae

Description:

Very large caterpillars. Mostly black with yellow bands with black mottling along the sides.

Habitat:

Spotted on a Catalpa tree on my parents' property. The property used to be an old field. Their property contains several acres of forest and creeks as well, with a hidden meadow between the trees.

Notes:

There were at least a hundred caterpillars on this tree. The tree was left skeletonized essentially. This happens annually and the tree always seems to recover.
