This bird is a member of the cardinal family. It is differentiated from the northern cardinal by the more subdued red coloration in the male, which is pictured here.

Habitat:

This spotting was made at Starr Pass in Tucson, AZ. This area is in a mountainous area in the Sonoran Desert.
