Parasol mushroom

Macrolepiota procera

Description:

Almost 20 cm in height (for the highest of three), with parasol shaped cap; cap whitish, covered with brownish scaly growth. Stipe thin and upright, with a movable ring on it. This movable ring is used to distinguish this species from some similarly looking but toxic Macrolepiota species.

Habitat:

Seen on in coastal area a bit outside of Pointe Noire, in not-so-dense tropical forest (rather what was left of it...), bordering a salty lagoon linked to ocean.

Notes:

Reported as appreciated comestible mushroom; stipe/stem is discarded being too fibrous; and it shouldn't be eaten raw as it is slightly toxic. In some regions, there are similar looking mushrooms that can be easily confounded with Parasol.
