Red-lined Geometer

Crypsiphona occultaria

Description:

A fairly large geometrid which is a good match for the stone wall. When it flew away it showed some flashes of red. About 40mm across.

Habitat:

Stone wall at the local primary school at night.

Notes:

It is intriguing me how often and how quickly moths know exactly where to land to maximise their disguise. Distribution - http://bie.ala.org.au/species/Crypsiphon... "As larvae they are green and feed on eucalypt leaves. When threatened the grub stands still, pretending to be a stick" - Wikipedia
