Dryocopus pileatus
This 19" pileated woodpecker gives off a spectacular appearance with his bright red crest, his black back, red mustache and a long gray bill. Makes large holes in trees. It is amazing to watch them make a hole. I watched an hour one day as both a male and female took turns carving out this one hole. You could actually see large chips of wood flying out of the hole. I never get tired of taking this bird's picture.
This pileated woodpecker was spotted in the woods near Frenchman's Wilderness Campground in Butte La Rose, Louisiana. There were about 2 or 3 pileated woodpeckers in the same area.
