Goliath Heron

Ardea goliath

Description:

The largest heron: up to 150cm height and 230cm wingspan! Massive black bill. Dark grey mantle and upperwings. Rufous body, underwings, neck and head. White throat.

Habitat:

Lakes, dam, mangoves and estuaries where they could easily hide in reeds or shrubs.

Notes:

We spotted a couple in the sine-sayoum mangroves, trying to hide in the trees. When flying, these massive birds are impressive.
