Silver Y

autographa gamma

Description:

A medium sized moth with around a 4-5cm wingspan, the silver 'Y' on its wings give this moth its common name. I took a few photos of it with its wings open first and after I tred to get a little closer it turned itself around to face downwards and shut its wings to display a pair of eyes and what looked like a beak in the centre of the wings.

Habitat:

Found at Otmoor nature reserve with a lot of agricultural and man made wet lands in Beckley, Oxford.

Notes:

A new species to me.

Thanks J, looks like you have plenty of moth spottings yourself for moth week, hopefully you will get the big 1000 :-)

Thanks Pedro, the light was sheer luck as it hit the leaf just as I was taking it but you have many photos that are much more stunning than similar spots of mine, and it all goes towards the species count on here :-)
