Cramp Ball Fungus

Daldinia concentrica

Description:

Also known as Tinder Fungus, Coal Fungus, Carbon Balls, and King Alfred's Cakes. Looks like this fungi has been burnt to a crisp, but there's no evidence of any fire in this area. The surface is dotted with very small pores. Largest specimens approximately the size of marshmallows, although much crunchier. Probably a dozen or so specimens found at this location. Colour a dark, bluish-grey, although from a distance it looks black. No evidence of any spore hole. Apparently, when cut open, the inside reveals a series of concentric rings (hence the name), which represent seasons of growth. This species seems to like a damp environment.

Habitat:

On a rotting tree trunk in the Cumberland State Forest, in a moist and well shaded area. Here's some info: http://www.forestrycorporation.com.au/vi...
