Dacelo novaeguineae
The laughing kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae) is a carnivorous bird in the kingfisher family Halcyonidae. Native to eastern Australia, The laughing kookaburra is a stocky bird of about 45 cm (18 in) in length, with a large head, prominent brown eyes, and a very large bill. The sexes look similar. They perch on branches with a good view and wait for prey to pass by. When I was a child we often spent a day in the bush, with a bar-b-que for lunch, and on several occasions a kookaburra swooped down and took the meat off my plate!
