Birds of the Colne Estuary

Birds of the Colne Estuary

Post any bird photos you take along the Colne Estuary to this mission. Technically the estuary is anything between Wivenhoe and Mersea, but sightings from elsewhere along the river are welcome. Try and give as many details as you can remember about the birds' behaviour, like if they were breeding or feeding, and what kind of habitat they were on (salt marsh, mudflat etc). The Colne Estuary in Essex is a highly protected area, with many designated SSSI's (Sites of Special Scientific Interest) and SPA's (Special Protected Areas - places deemed important for the breeding, migration, wintering or otherwise of vulnerable bird species). Estuaries naturally provide a range of habitats from more riverine reed beds, to mudflats and salt marshes. Unfortunately, despite all the protection, some areas of the estuary are still quite polluted. The aim of this mission is to uncover the diversity of the bird life populating the estuary, and track how it changes over time.
