Project Noah Fact of the Day: The New Zealand green lipped mussel has been harvested for human consumption since the beginning of human habitation in New Zealand. It is of great economic value in New Zealand and is currently propagated and farmed for both food and as a medicinal supplement. They are filter feeders and feed on various types of phytoplankton within and just below the intertidal zone where they live around the coast of New Zealand's mainland.
