Barred owl

Strix varia

Description:

Two young owlets were hunting near a water ditch. The first one had been preening and suddenly stretched all its feathers, as if to say: "It's hot! I have both a parasol and a fan." The other one was calling softly but with a very open mouth, looking like it was singing an aria. These owls usually have feathers on their eyelids; this young one still has pink lids.

Mason Farm Biological Reserve

Congratulations Maria, your Barred Owl is our Spotting of the Day:

"Perfect timing! This young Barred Owl is our Spotting of the Day! We love your stories as much as your images on Project Noah. Maria de Bruyn writes about her spotting: "Two young owlets were hunting near a water ditch. The first one had been preening and suddenly stretched all its feathers, as if to say: "It's hot! I have both a parasol and a fan." The other one was calling softly but with a very open mouth, looking like it was singing an aria.
