Argiope aurantia
This spider has yellow and black markings on its abdomen and legs. I believe this is a female due to its size. It was approximately a little over an inch in length.
I found this spider in a botanical garden in Austin, Texas. Yellow Garden spiders are found in plants, shrubs, and flower gardens. This spider inhabits the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Central America.
Who doesn't love a large spider! I was excited to spot this one. FUN FACTS: 1. The Yellow Garden spider also goes by the following names: Black and Yellow Garden, Golden Garden, Writing, Zigzag, Hay, Corn, and McKinley spider. 2. Females breed once a year. They generally produce 1-3 egg sacs with each sac containing anywhere from 300-1,400 eggs per sac! 3. They spin orb webs which can be as large as 2 feet in diameter.
