Eastern Painted Turtle

Chrysemys picta picta

Description:

"Chrysemys" is derived from the Greek words "chrysos" meaning "gold" and "emys" which means "freshwater tortoise"; "picta" is derived from the Latin word "pictus" which means "painted." Today's lesson in etymology courtesy the Virginia Herpetological Society. The preceding gallery features three crops of the same photo.
