Bibio xanthopus
Black fly with red, muscular-looking legs.
Landed on my daughters sweater while we were walking along a stream at Palomar Mountain about 5,300 feet in elevation. There were Oak and mixed evergreen trees in this forest. These are found from "Canada to extreme northern Mexico" - BugGuide
"Adults are important pollinators." - Wikipedia "Bibio larvae grow up in grassy areas and are herbivores and scavengers feeding on dead vegetation or living plant roots." - Wikipedia
