The long, lance-like leaves have strongly pronounced, odd-numbered, parallel ribs running the length of the leaf. The flower head grows on a long, thin, unbranched stalk that rises out of the center of the basal rosette of leaves. The flower head is roughly shaped like a slender pineapple, flowering from the bottom up with a ring of white-tipped stamen that encircle the flower head like a delicate tutu.
Disturbed soil, compacted soil, lawns, trailsides, roadsides
The leaves have a crunchy texture and a nutty flavor. Use the young leaves of the basal rosette in early spring in salads or as a potherb. Use the leaves in any season as a trail side poultice for cuts, scrapes, itchy bug bites, wasp and bee stings. Gather and dry the leaves in spring before they flower to dry for making tea to ease coughs.
