Three-toed box turtle

Terrapene carolina

Description:

Two 2 or 3 year old box turtles. One had an interesting zigzag pattern on the top of the carapace.

Habitat:

Three-toed box turtles are common in north Louisiana. They live in upland hardwood forests.

Notes:

These two box turtles were raised by Martha Ann Messenger and George Patton, amateur naturalists and box turtle experts. They live near Bastrop, Louisiana and wanted to release the young turtles in an undisturbed habitat. My 3-year old grandson, Hudson Ouchley, assisted in the release of the turtles.
