Broad-headed skink

Plestiodon laticeps

Description:

Small to medium-sized lizard with smooth, shiny, brown scales. The male is olive-brown with few or no stripes. The head is vivid orange-red and the jaws appear swollen during the breeding season.

Habitat:

Bottomland hardwood forest

Notes:

I saw several of these male broad-headed skinks today at the refuge. The tip of this male's tail was gone.
