Black Crowned Night Heron

Description:

This is a medium sized heron with a large black bill, red eyes, a black feathers that start at its crown and continue over its back. Its wing feathers are gray and breast feathers are white. It has yellow feet, and makes a distinct "Quawk" call. The hunt more enthusiastically in the evening and at night.

Notes:

The gentleman has the long, thin-white wedding plumage that is just visible starting at the back of his neck. He was perched high up in a maple tree, and we were discussing whether or not he might start building a nest at this location as there is a heronry on the south side of the city.
