this is not a joke, I was actually taking a picture of the tree behind but when I downloaded the images I discovered that I had inadvertently caught this white and orange object. Any suggestions as to its identity would be much appreciated. It was a partially overcast day with a light 7/8ths cloud cover

My first thought was dragonfly as well. My second was a small bird (like hummingbird type). A very interesting find, no matter what!
This looks like a type of dragonfly to me. Looks a lot like a UFO in the first photo! :-) In the second photo, it looks more dragonfly-like. Nice shot!
