Ghost Fungus

Omphalotus nidiformis

Description:

These were clumps of mushrooms with streaky split caps growing on the base of a giant gum. The caps (25mm wide) were dark but had peeled off in streaks to expose white flesh beneath. The caps were also split from the margins making them look very attractive. Cream coloured gills were spaced and slightly decurrent. Stipe was plain and the same colour as the gills.

Habitat:

Damp eucalyptus forest. These were spotted on a live tree (probably diseased)- there were several clumps around the base of the tree.

Notes:

Known for its bioluminescence.
