No, I put them in a kill jar first. I did it during an etymology course and haven't done it since, except once in a fir of passion chasing a tiger beetle. Pinning a live insect would be sadistic not to mention hard to do, that being said I accidentally did that to a mosquito, it's best to leave the insect in the jar with poison for at least an hour so you don't cause undue pain to an insect by pinning it live.

All that said etymology is weird.
