I wish I could remember what plant it was on, but I don't. However, I do remember that the plant was in a marshy area.

Sawfly for sure. Do you know what plant it is on? That usually leads to a species right away.

I think this may be a type of sawfly larva. Here is one that is not exact but similar http://bugguide.net/node/view/194890
