Koki'o ke'oke'o (White Hibiscus)

Hibiscus arnottianus

Description:

The plant was found as a small bush. The leaves were round, shiny and vary in size between 1 1/2 to 3 inches. The Hibiscus bush that I found had single flowers found randomly in various areas. The flowers on the bush were found at the end of the branches. The white Hibiscus flower was about 4 inches in its width. In the center of the flower had a red staminal column. At the ends of the column were little yellow pollen. The flowers give off a subtle pleasant fragrant.

Habitat:

This hibiscus bush was found on the Kamehameha Schools Kapalama campus. The plant is located behind the athletic facilities, Koia, planted in a small median found in the middle of the road.

Notes:

The white hibiscus is an endemic plant to Hawaii. It's also federally listed to be an endangered species.
