Pterostichus melanarius
This beetle can grow a little over a half inch long and is nearly all black with some reddish-brown coloring on its antennae and legs. Grooves run lengthwise down its wings. They do not fly.
They live under leaves, logs, stones and can be found in moist fields, gardens, and woods.
This beetle was found in the crack of the sidewalk in front of my house.
