Common Black Ground Beetle

Pterostichus melanarius

Description:

This beetle can grow a little over a half inch long and is nearly all black with some reddish-brown coloring on its antennae and legs. Grooves run lengthwise down its wings. They do not fly.

Habitat:

They live under leaves, logs, stones and can be found in moist fields, gardens, and woods.

Notes:

This beetle was found in the crack of the sidewalk in front of my house.
