Common Palmfly Butterfly with cocoon

Elymnias hypermnestra

Description:

The white triangle on the upperwing is distinctive. When it opened its wings I thought I was mistaken in taking it to be a Palmfly because it looked just like the Tiger butterfly...a bright orange...and the Palmfly that lived in my garden wasn't anything like that. Now I know, my resident butterfly is a male and this one here is a female. (Wikipedia says ...."...the females mimic butterfly species of the genus Danaus.") It is sitting on an empty cocoon. Initially I had thought it was laying eggs...but then I saw it was a cocoon.

Habitat:

It was sitting very high up on the frond on a Palm tree in my garden (2nd photo), so I went upstairs to be level with it and got photo 1 (after which it flew away).

Notes:

I wonder if it is a newly emerged butterfly...but surely it would not be begining its life cycle at the onset of winter (very mild here though). This is my 777th spotting.
