Wild onion

Allium

Description:

Low, slender, upright perennial. Grass like leaves that when crushed have an onion smell. Flowers pale to dark pink.

Habitat:

Various soils. These were growing in full sun, on a dry, rocky hillside, almost buried in a colony of Golden Eye.

Notes:

Take care in distinguishing onions from toxic members of the lily, iris, and amaryllis family. Never gather plants that do not have the distinctive onion aroma. That said, wild onion can be used in the same way any onion is. They were also traditionally used medicinally. The plants supply a natural antiseptic and contain high levels of vitamin C.
