Common toad

Bufo bufo

Description:

A large, squat toad; females generally larger than males. Body colour usually uniformly olive-brown or sandy brown on upperside; reddish individuals do occur. Underside usually greyish. Skin is covered in distinct warts. Eye is orange-bronze with horizontal pupil.

Habitat:

Breeds in shallow pools but at other times of year often found in rather dry habitats including open woodland and heaths. Widespread throughout the region but absent from many islands, including Balearics.

Notes:

Looked like it was blind in its left eye (see last photo for a close-up).
