Devil's Coach Horse

Description:

Large Rove beetle about 1 inch long

Habitat:

Backyard patio with porch light on. I placed it in a jar for a couple pics then let it go. "native to w. Palaearctic, adventive in NA (w. US: WA-CA-AZ)"

They often eat, and may help to control, the introduced brown garden snail. --Margaret Thayer

Definitely a Staphylinidae, or a rove beetle, but I can't be certain if the species. Usually great predators and beneficial insect to have around. One of the common names is "devils coach horse"!
