Polistes fuscatus
Adult Northern Paper wasps feed mainly on plant nectar, but are considered insectivorous because they kill caterpillars and other small insects in order to provide food for developing larvae. They build distinctive paper nests attached to a surface by a stalk. These are large social wasps with long legs, usually brown, yellow markings typically less extensive than yellow jackets. Males have curly antennae and yellow faces.
North America, from British Columbia east to the Atlantic, and south to West Virginia. Nests in woodlands and savannas. Common around human habitations, especially where exposed wood is present and can be used for nest material.
