Fouquieria splendens
Desert shrub from 3-30 ft. tall. Vertical, spiny, wand like branches emerge from root crown. Leaves are usually absent except after rain. Bright red, tubular flowers in spring.
Desert flats, rocky slopes, and mesas usually. This one is located in the Heritage Elementary School, Texas Our Heritage School Garden, representing the ten eco regions of Texas.
Plant is often used for fencing. Cut stems, lightly buried in a shallow trench will often take root. The flowers and seedpods are edible. Flowers can be eaten fresh or dipped in batter and fried, or turned into a tangy beverage by soaking in water, among other things.
