Thanks for the tip David, looking through the Cereus species I can find it looks most like Cereus hildmannianus. In past years it has sprouted numerous flowers at once and the spines look the same as does the flower. We have never seen it fruit and sometimes the flowers open during the day or at least stay open during the day. It was probably grown from a cutting by our neighbours daughter as she used to cultivate them in the garden.
