Timber Rattlesnake

Crotalus horridus

Description:

Venomous pit viper found in the eastern US. Has a thinish dark brown stripe along the length of its back, it is overall tan with series of very dark chevrons running the length of the top side and looks like it has chevrons running along its underside as well.

Habitat:

Generally found in deciduous forests in rugged terrain. Can be found basking on rocks and roads before giving birth. Males tend to spend more time in cooler, denser woodlands.

Notes:

Also known as Canebrake Rattlesnake in South Georgia. Spotted this lovely specimen in the middle of the road around 5pm. I parked my car in front of her with my hazards on. I had to take a picture because I've never seen one before. I walked behind it and stomped my feet to get it off the road. It was pretty lethargic as it may have been pregnant and the road was pretty warm. It eventually slithered off the road but never rattled its tail.

Beautiful snake! I have noticed that, oftentimes, venomous snakes are the most beautiful.

Thanks I appreciate it!
Snake sightings are so far and few between that it is so exciting when I get to see one. 😁
