Alaus oculatus
Alaus oculatus is a species of click beetle. It is 25–45 millimeters in length. It is found in Central and North America. Their diet consists of nectar and plant juice. The larva's diet consists of grubs and wood-boring beetles.

I've been hoping to find one of these guys ever since I saw a photo of one in my field guide! I was taking photos of a pair of mating skinks when this one appeared & I think I'm probably responsible for saving its life as one of the skinks started to pursue it but saw me & changed its mind!

I was stoked to spot him Carol - I just wish I had been fast enough to get the shot of the skink chasing him! Unfortunately it was really dark so I had to use flash & it's upset the color balance.
