Wild Ponies

Equus ferus caballus

Description:

Compared to other horses, ponies often exhibit thicker manes, tails and overall coat, as well as proportionally shorter legs, wider barrels, heavier bone, thicker necks, and shorter heads with broader foreheads.

Habitat:

Greyson Highlands State Park. At an elevation of 5,000 feet this area is covered by "balds", a clear area with alpine meadows.

Notes:

The park is known for these wild ponies. They are very accustomed to humans. These new born foes can only be a few weeks old. The redish colored one was very interested in me and came right up to check me out.If in the area you should try to see them. It took a hike of about 2 miles to find them high on the ridge near the appilacian trail.
