Calotropis gigantea
The calotropis has 5 main species and the species that I found in my backyard was the calotropis gigantea. The crown flower is a medium sized shrub or small tree. The crown flower can grow up to 4 meters with a lot of milky sap when broken. As you can see, caterpillars have really eaten the leaves of the crown flower. Over the years we were able to find that we could "harvest" butterflies by only feeding them the leaves of the crown flower.
The crown flower is mainly found in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Southern China, and Inda. Although found to spread throughout the South Pacific and Northern Australia.
