Amanita sp.

Description:

Medium sized yellow mushroom in a state of semi-decay. Pale scales on the cap. Gilled underside. Damaged areas of mushroom turn reddish, giving this mushroom its common name.

Habitat:

Temperate forest. Nolin Lake State Park, Kentucky.

That being said, there seems to be conflicting information online, whether they do occur here or not.

I have been discussing this with some mushroom folks who are familiar with Eastern U.S. fungi. They told me that A. rubescens does not occur in North America. There are similar species here, though. I will stick with Amantia sp. for now. Thank you again for both of your input!
